 | An interesting four pageGOLD RUSH LETTERwith a clear San Francisco post mark and dated April 30, 1850. The letter, written to F. Curtis & Co. of Hartford CT, concerns the tribulations experienced by the writer, Horace P. Janes, in clearing goods through customs. Curtis was a major wholesale manufacturer of silver, silverplate, and britanna wares in the 1840s and 50s with offices in Hartford, Glastonbury, and New York City. Janes was a Vermont native, who had only just arrived with his family in San Francisco; he was a lawyer and commercial agent and established a thriving practise before his early death in 1862 at age 38.
